From arson, to church vs. state, to Dirty Harry, the Mt. Davidson cross has a long, sordid history quite befitting a San Francisco landmark.

Instant Streets: Golden Gate

The name “Tenderloin” has been credited to many tales of yore. Some say the word Tenderloin referred to the “tender loins” of prostitutes who were the pleasure of many men who roamed its streets post-Gold Rush and during wartime. Retired SFPD claim the name refers to the better cut of meat afforded them for working the gritty neighborhood. Some even claim the name was San Francisco’s answer to NYC’s own historically sinful part of town, also known as Satan’s Circus. And while the origin of the name “Tenderloin” remains dubious, equally contentious has been the mapping out the Tenderloin. Our best efforts have concluded that if you’re anywhere south of Geary, east of Van Ness, north of Market, and west of Mason, you’re in the TL.
